When and what media?
While in college, I have adopted a principle that I live by of when and what media to participate in. In my opinion, some forms of media are beneficial while alone while others are not. Reading books has been shown to be very healthy for the brain. That is something that I will do when I am alone because it is beneficial for me. I do not believe that watching television or movies alone is beneficial for me. I have never felt that it is, nor have I seen data that suggests that it is better than any other activities that I could be doing.
I feel more comfortable watching a movie when I am with someone because it is a way to strengthen my relationship with them. Because of that, the movie helps me grow in a way. I do not feel that watching a movie alone does much for me besides just being entertained. I know of many other more constructive ways to be entertained than that.
Because of that, I never watch television. I feel like the nature of television is something that you watch alone. Of course it could be watched with multiple people, but it is much more common to watch a television show alone than a movie.
Some more constructive forms of entertainment are sports. Sports such as pickleball or spikeball are easy to learn and can be enjoyed by anyone. There is also reading books, studying the scriptures, playing instruments, working out, studying for school, serving, or enjoying time with friends (even if it is a movie, it is better than watching alone).
I also understand that there are times in life that watching television or movies alone might be the best thing. Such as in cases of sickness or disease, or living alone. However, for me currently, with the part of my life I am living and all the opportunities I have, there is no reason for me to be watching television alone.
